Introduction

GlobAEROSOL was an ESA Data User Element (DUE) project which produced a global dataset of aerosol properties from an ensemble of European satellite instruments. The instruments used in the project, and the date ranges over which they supply data (up until the end 2007, which is the end of the period covered by the project) are:

Instrument Platform Date range Algorithm
ATSR-2 ERS-2 1995-2003 ORAC dual-view
AATSR ENVISAT 2002-2007 ORAC dual-view
MERIS ENVISAT 2002-2007 ESA standard level 2
SEVIRI Meteosat 8 2004-2007 ORAC single-view

The GlobAEROSOL products thus cover 1995 until the end of 2007, with increasing density of data coverage throughout the period.

The GlobAEROSOL consortium consisted of GMV (principal contractors), the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (RAL), the University of Oxford and LOA at the University of Lille. Oxford's role in the project was to supply and provide support for the algorithm used to analyse ATSR-2 and AATSR data, as well as performing validation of GlobAEROSOL products in conjunction with RAL. The algorithm used for the analysis of ATSR-2 and AATSR data in GlobAEROSOL was the Oxford-RAL Aerosol and Cloud retrieval (ORAC) scheme, a version of which has also been supplied by RAL to perform the analysis of SEVIRI data for the project.

Links and Documentation

  • The GlobAEROSOL homepage provides access to the data, documentation and example code for reading and viewing the data.
  • The ESA DUE site provides information on the DUE project as a whole, with links to other "Glob" products.
  • A product user guide is also available, which provides all the information needed sucessfully read and use the products.
  • A validation of the products has also been carried out.
  • Several other documents produced in the course of the project are available here while presentations made at various conferences during the course of the project are available here.
