OUCH - Handicap Runs
Next run: Thursday, 21st June (anticlockwise)
[Start times]
This is a venture in mixed-ability sociable running,
traditionally held on the third Thursday of each month (or, maybe the second)
The rules are displayed in the Mornington Crescent Library and disputes are
resolved by the Angel and Greyhound Committee.
The basic (anti-clockwise) long course
is
Mansfield Road - Linacre Cycle Track - Marston Road - Jackstraws Lane -
Staunton Road - Headley Way - Marston Ferry Road - North Oxford Cycle Route - Norham
Gardens - Parks Rd -
Science Area - Mansfield
Road (marked on the map as the 'Long Route', 4.87 miles, measured by GPS).
Choose your own short cuts or extensions (the recommended short-cut being
to omit Jackstraws Lane and Headley Way if the long route takes you over
40 minutes). The 'women's long route' (omitting Jackstraws Lane
but turning right at the end of the Linacre cycle track up Ferry Rd to
Marston Rd rather than cutting through the houses, marked on the map as the
'Short Route') is 4.66 miles.
For those unable to make a particular handicap evening, a time may be submitted for
any run completed in the previous 7 days, but not later (since we want to know who's
won by the time we get to the bar on Thursday evening).
Prizes
'Improvements' are based on the best of the previous two
runs (or single run if only one run completed)
within the previous 6 months (as shown in the table)
- The person who improves most will receive the
singular honour, not to mention burden, of selecting the following
week's 'Guest Pub' (only one run in previous 6 months required to qualify)
- The person who improves most
wins a bottle of wine (at least two runs in previous 6 months required to qualify).
But don't get too excited - you also have to donate
the bottle of wine for the next month's winner.
- The person who has the second biggest improvement (of those with at least
2 runs in previous 6 months) chooses the following week's 'Guest Route'.
The results are now all computer-generated from a
single database (here) but if you don't trust
them, the last 'hand-generated' version of the results is
here)
Results
In the above files the following colours/symbols are used
- * Personal Best
- ! Won the bottle of wine
- !* PB & won bottle
- f First run
Plots below show
variation in speed relative to their average (positive = faster),
averages based on the last 6 months (top) and all runs so far
(bottom). Also listed on the right is the speed of their last run (relative
to the average) and
the average time.
The top plot only includes those with at least two recorded times in
the past 6 months, and the lower plot the results since the handicaps
began. Any times greater than 10% of each person's
average have been excluded from the plots and the calculation of the average.
