Benson 10k ("The Bun Run")

A pleasant and mainly flat course out and around Benson in S. Oxon. Your correspondent posted 48.54, and enjoyed the re-fuelling option of several Hot Cross Buns at race end. This was the second running of the event, numbers capped at 450, and sold out a few weeks in advance - CL.

Nice course - couple of reasonable hills, but otherwise fairly flat (and the hills are not too long and attackable - GC.

Berkhamsted Half Marahton

The HQ is at a small cricket/sports club so there are reasonably good changing facilities and showers (but cold by the time I got to them). There are also coffee/tea/sandwich and bar facilities for post-race recuperation. The course is mainly rural and undulating with a long slow hill from miles 2 to 3 and another short sharp one just before mile 7. The last two miles are downhill! It was well marshalled. The railway station is less than 5 mins walk from race HQ. If you drive there, park in the station car park - it's big and free and only a short walk from the start - PD.

Ely "New Year's Eve" 10K

http://www.newyearseve10k.co.uk/
The last 300m or so were over very slippery muddy field, which didn't exactly allow for sprint finishes, but otherwise a good, reasonably level (one relatively short hill) road course. Bitterly cold, and quite windy (the course is pretty exposed) but at least the heavy snow of the previous few days had melted/been washed away the night before. Bottle of local ale on crossing finish line...! - MB

Kewstoke, near Weston-super-Mare, Somerset.
Many runners had clearly not read the eligibility rules, and arrived at the start sober. This clearly disadvantaged your correspondent, who meandered round a pleasant seaside course in 53.17, and savaged the cheese and pickle rolls afterwards. Howard's Summer Triathlon

What can one say ?
Evidence that Howard might have a screw loose
here.
In his own words -
Date: Fri, 05 Jul 2002 16:51:39 +0100
From: Howard Roscoe
Subject: Summer triathlon

Howard's 2002 summer triathlon (assuming we get back to summer) will be on
Tuesday 30 July.

There will be a new course this year, in order to reduce the overemphasis on
cycling. All events will start and finish at Brook Cottage, Comberton, making
it easier for those only taking part in one or two events.

More info nearer the time, but in order to help with catering for afterwards,
please email me if you think you will be taking part - H

Salisbury Fire Station Half Marathon

Course was very nice, if slightly undulating. On quiet roads through Wiltshire countryside. Not many marshals around but noone seemed to get lost. The race was not very competitive, as you can see. About 200 entrants. Extra prizes if you're a firefighter - Oliver.

Shakespeare Half Marathon

www.shakespearemarathon.org.uk/

Starts in the middle of Stratford upon Avon. Undulating course with some main roads and some footpaths. Simultaneous marathon event involves a second lap of the same course.

I liked the course and thought the run-in along the Greenway was actually quite good despite it looking like a bit of a drag of the map. There was only the rather large hill at Grid Ref: SP 153 503 (Rumer Hill) and the 1 in 7 decent down the other side that I wasn't a big fan of...! - GC

Silverstone Half Marathon (aka Flora London 1/2M)

www.tophalfmarathons.co.uk )

Confusingly, the London 1/2M is held at Silverstone racetrack in Northants. Involves at least two laps of the Formula One track, as well as some in-field and outer ring road parts as well. As ever with London Marathon races, the organisation was excellent and it's really easy to get to and park at - GC

Three Downs Challenge

Just outside Bath. An allegedly "gently undulating" course turned out to consist of thee Category 5 climbs and twisting descents, on every surface except tarmac, over an unspecified distance - best guess, 7.5 - 8 ml. Including the blistering heat, it was a welcome relief to get to The Bull at Hinton, but only after 81m28xs of torture. Recommended - CL

TURTTLE Challenge

The Unspeakably Real Tilehurst Ten Lubricious Event is a 10 mile off-road race organised by Reading Joggers since 1992 with sponsorship from a local pub and a fish and chip shop. It was 'discovered' by us in 1997 and is now a favourite. The result sheet contains interesting statistics about the weight of flour used to mark the course and the number of hours spent strimming thistles, nettles and long grass. The event trophies are, apparently, made from Victorian decorative ridge tile made by Colliers and link the TURTTLE to the history of Tilehurst.
